What
is Medical Qigong?
Medical Qigong is one of the
oldest branches of Chinese Medicine, predating
acupuncture by thousands of years. Qi refers
to the life force energy that flows through
the acupuncture channels, while Gong means
skill acquired through practice. Thus, Medical
Qigong refers to a wide series of therapeutic
exercises, breathing methods, and healing
mental imagery that guide and direct the
Qi for health and balance.
Medical Qigong can be divided
into three categories:
• physical therapy exercises for building Qi and healing specific disorders
• relaxation methods for guiding the Qi within, and for stress management
• external Qi healing (Wai Qi Liao Fa) for emitting Qi to heal others
Today there are hundreds of
Medical Qigong hospitals and clinics throughout
China, treating such problems as breast and
ovarian tumors and cysts, paraplegia and
hemiplegia, muscular atrophy, stress and
insomnia, immune deficiency disorders, migraine
headaches, certain types of cancer and pain.
What
is the Medical Qigong Therapy Program?
The Medical Qigong Therapy
Program is a two-year certification program
providing training for the clinical practice
of Medical Qigong. Classes meet one weekend
a month, with a one- to two-week intensive
during the summer months.
Students in the Medical Qigong
Therapy Program will learn:
• Qigong exercises, meditations and self-massage
for building, guiding and emitting healing Qi
• Medical Qigong treatment protocols for a wide
range of common disorders
• Qigong precautions, contraindications and Qi
deviations
• the guiding principles of Oriental medical theory
• meridian and point location and function
• special and unique methods of Qigong diagnosis
In addition to the more traditional
Oriental medicine and Qigong studies, the
Medical Qigong Program will also cover:
• anatomy and physiology from the Western medical perspective
• practical aspects of running a professional
clinic
• professional ethics and psychology as related
to the field of energy healing.
Our program emphasizes the psycho-spiritual
components of healing. Alongside the more technical
skills taught as part of the Medical Qigong Therapy
training, students will be taught to develop their intuitive
faculties necessary for energetic diagnosis and healing.
Our Program also emphasizes the psycho-spiritual components
of healing.
Is
there licensing for Medical Qigong Therapy?
Licensing is a state-by-state issue. The
National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), the same organization that
certifies acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists, now
offers a National Board Certification examination in
Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT) that includes Medical Qigong
Therapy. Over 35 states currently accept the NCCAOM
exam for licensing acupuncturists. Six states now accept
the NCCAOM ABT exam as the main requirement for licensing
Medical Qigong therapists, and eighteen other states
are currently eligible. We anticipate that more states
will follow. Healing Tao Institute’s 620-hour
program Medical Qigong Therapist Program is designed
to more than meet these new national standards.

General Information
Application and Registration
In order to be in the Certification Training Program
in Medical Qigong Therapy, you must apply and be accepted.
To apply, you must fill out the Healing Tao Institute
Application Form (in center of this catalogue or on-line)
and meet all the requirements listed on that form.
You will be notified of your acceptance in writing,
either by e-mail or postal letter.
You may register for classes prior to your acceptance
in the Medical Qigong Program. You may also register
for classes informally if you are not enrolling in
the Medical Qigong Program (providing you have met
the prerequisites, if any) on a space-available basis.
Class size is limited; Medical Qigong program students
will be given first priority.
Healing Tao Institute operates on an academic quarter
system, along with the changes of the seasons. New
students may begin their course of study in the Fall
or Spring quarter each year. The courses are taught
as intensive weekend classes held once a month, except
Tai Chi classes, which meet weekly.
Locations of Classes
Healing Tao Institute classes are held at various
locations in the Austin area. You will be informed
of class locations prior to registration each quarter.
Time of Classes
All weekend classes will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00
p.m., with a lunch break from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Classes
will begin on time so please plan to arrive early.
You must preregister for all classes. Times vary for
weekly classes.
Tuition and Other Costs
The tuition for all thirty-six hour courses is $685
per course for full-time students taking all three
weekend courses in a given quarter if pre-registered
at least one week prior to the course commencement
date. The tuition for all twelve hour weekly and weekend
courses is $245 if pre-registered at least one week
prior to the course commencement date; the last minute
tuition is $295 if registered less than one week prior
to the course commencement date.
Students must register in person for the entire
quarter at registration at least two weeks prior to
commencement of classes. Tuition must be paid in full
before the commencement of classes. In some cases,
monthly payments may be arranged for an additional
fee.
Students should budget about $50 to $200 per quarter
for textbooks in the first year. Most second year
courses will use the same textbooks as the first year
courses, but students should still budget around $200
for total second year book costs. All textbooks will
be available through Healing Tao Institute or nearby
bookstores.
Refunds and Credits
Course tuitions may be refunded in full (less $50
per course withdrawal fee) if the student gives notice
of withdrawal at least two weeks in advance of the
first class date. After those dates, no refunds will
be given. However, students may have Healing Tao Institute
credit those amounts (less $50 per course withdrawal
fee) towards another Healing Tao Institute course.
The $75 application fee is non-refundable. If any
classes are cancelled due to insufficient enrollment,
Healing Tao Institute will issue you a full refund
or credit.
Transfer Credits
Healing Tao Institute may allow full transfer credits
for all Western Science, Practice Management, and
Oriental Medicine Theory courses, based upon receipt
of a certified transcript from the institution of
learning and the provision that the previous course
taken is equivalent to Healing Tao Institute’s
course requirements.
Transfer credit may also be allowed for some Medical
Qigong and Tai Chi courses taken elsewhere, based
upon an oral or written interview, a written and/or
practical exam, proof of hours and course taken, or
any combination of these requirements at the discretion
of the Program Director.
Students who are commuting from out of town to Austin
for study in the Medical Qigong Program may meet the
Program’s Tai Chi Qigong requirements either
through approved study with another instructor, or
through a special Healing Tao Tai Chi intensive retreat
week held during the summer. If there are enough students,
a Tai Chi retreat will be arranged in the Austin area.
Several of the other Medical Qigong courses are also
taught internationally through the Healing Tao by
Master Mantak Chia and other certified Instructors
in the Healing Tao system. Full transfer credit will
be given for these courses with verification of courses
and hours. The maximum limit on transfer credits is
34 credits (approximately 414 class hours).
Additional Requirements for Graduation
All Medical Qigong Therapy program students must completed
at least 60 hours of undergraduate credits outside
of Healing Tao Institute before graduation. Anatomy
and Physiology credits may be applied toward the undergraduate
hours.
Students must also receive and document twelve hours
of Medical Qigong Therapy clinical treatment before
graduation. These treatments must be given by a Certified
Medical Qigong Therapist. Treatments are available
in the Austin area from Dr. Jampa Stewart and graduates
of the Healing Tao Institute Medical Qigong program.
A list of graduates in the area is available upon
request.
